Wessex was an Anglo-Saxon Kingdom in the south of England from 519-927. Today it forms part of the United Kingdom and comprises several English counties. The ancient kingdom was the province of kings including Alfred the Great and Athelstan, the place where St. George slew the Dragon and embraces many evocative stone circles, burial barrows and henges such as Avebury and Stonehenge along with hill carvings to reveal chalk images of horses and other symbols. It is one of the oldest parts of England and has a timeless quality through its history and the atmospheric monuments it has left behind.
